Description

These Astrobin Debut Objects are located in the constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -5 degrees.   The galaxies are too far apart to be companions.

NGC 1358 is the beautiful barred spiral galaxy at lower left, located 190 million light years away.  This magnitude 13 galaxy spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a Milky Way size diameter of 120,000 light years.  Our view of this galaxy is halfway between face-on and edge-on.  I like the contrast between the yellow core and the blue outer disk, especially the bright star formation rim at the upper left of the disk.  I do not understand what could be causing this asymmetric rim effect.  I find it interesting that the disk is not an oval but more of a hexagon shape.

NGC 1355 is the edge-on spiral at upper right, located 120 million light years away.  This magnitude 13 galaxy spans 1.4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a Milky Way size diameter of 50,000 light years.  I like the peanut-shaped central core and the slightly warped disk.
